When planning a vacation, prolonged car trips are simply unavoidable. Sitting idly in the car can be a torture for children. Therefore it is important to keep them entertained with several exciting, educative and fun-filled activities when going on a long car journey. This also gives you an opportunity to spend quality time with your children that would have otherwise been difficult. Here are 6 helpful traveling tips to keep children entertained in car.

1. Make sure to carry printable coloring pages, papers, crayons and pencils while traveling. Children love colors and coloring is an activity that can keep them busy for several hours. Ask your child to draw pictures of beautiful landscapes as they see while driving. Coloring allows your child to give forms to their imagination and helps bring out their creativity and originality.

2. Give the children a copy of the map of the route you intend to take. Ask them to mark on map the places that you have passed and help them to judge their current position. You can also give them a compass and teach them how to use it along with the map. This activity is exciting for children and will also help them to identify places and intercept driving directions.

3. Play car games with your children like the license plate game. Ask your kiddo to look for and count automobile license plates from other U.S. states. Take a note of all the unique license plate they have spotted. You can now ask them the capital of each state and tell interesting facts about each one of them. This game is fun and informative.

4. Carry some healthy and mess free snacks like sandwiches, fruits and juice boxes with you while traveling. Kids can get cranky when hungry, so that make sure you have enough food to feed them.

5. Pack some surprises for your kids. If your child’s feeling quite restless surprise him with his favorite goodies like toys, preferred chips, car video games, books or new DVDs.

6. The worst part of traveling with children is getting stuck in a traffic jam. You can play “I-Spy” to pass the time. Make up as funny items to spy as you can and your children will end up having a great time.
