Stay Cool in the Heat Without Air Conditioning
70Running the A/C is the fastest way to get cool, but...
it is also the most expensive. It can be a real struggle to decide how much to rely on your air conditioner for staying cool. The trade off is expense. The more you run your AC the more expensive it can be. So, to stay cool in the summer without trying to rely on your air conditioner too much, try the following tactics:
Tactic one: Use ceiling fans. Often, the heat of a room is less of an issue or factor than the stifling nature of stagnant hair. When an air conditioner is being run, the air is being cooled, but it is also being pushed through your house, circulating, and moving about. If you want to feel cooler without running your air conditioner, run your ceiling fan. It will move air around so that it feels cooler, and you will be more comfortable.
Tactic two: Open windows at night. The nights are always cooler than the days in the summer, so while it is important to try and keep the doors and windows closed during the day, it is a great way to cool your home to have them open at night. Just make sure you don’t open them until it has cooled down, and that you don’t leave them open the next morning too long, otherwise it will just get hot again. In addition, when your windows are open, try to keep fans going to circulate the air, as it will be cooler that way.
Tactic three: Shade your home. The heat from the outside can seep into your home, so if your home is shaded, especially the areas that let in the most heat (such as the sides facing the sun), it will mean less heat seeping through the walls and heating your home interior. A great way to shade your home is with your landscaping. You can put in trees, or you can use things like extra roofing, or awnings to help keep the sun off the house.
Keep cool with cold drinks.
Tactic four: Let less heat in through windows and doors.
Windows let in more heat than a whole wall, so make sure you keep your windows from heating your home too much. Window awnings are a great solution, as are blinds, drapes, and other ways to insulated the window. Doors should be left closed as much as possible, and if you have a glass door, do the same things you would do to stop heat from coming in through a window.
Tactic five: Better insulate to control temperature better. Insulation is key to temperature control, if you insulate well, you won’t have to run your AC as often, and your house will stay cool longer, so you can rely on it less.
