To Do or Not To Do...
The World Wide Web is a huge ocean full of millions of fish. Of course, just like the ocean, there are sharks waiting to attack the poor innocent fish out there. There have been many reports of pedophilia occurring due to online interactions. This has caused world wide panic which has resulted in an increase in the amount of online security products and privacy options on websites. It has also caused parents to somewhat over react to the situation and completely ban their children from the internet.
While this is definitely going to protect them from internet predators, it is not fair for the child to be held back from something that is a part of their generation. So in order to protect your children and still allow them to play the amazing online kids games and informative sites now available to the world, there are many things you should and should not do. This article discusses 2 things you should do and 2 things you should not do when it comes to protecting your fish from the sharks.
2 Things You Should To Protect Your Child Online
1. One excellent thing to do to protect your children is to monitor the sites they are visiting. There is a limit to this though which will be discussed in the next section. Just make sure that the sites they visit are credible. Search online for a community that is knowledgeable about the sites your child is on. A great community is the Yahoo! Answers community. You can ask questions there about anything and others like you will answer. It is quite an effective way to find out information that Google is failing to come up with.
2. Another thing you should do is to look at some of the many internet security tools that are available. Some of them are great for putting parental locks on particular websites. Again make sure you find out which ones are credible as there are many that are full of loopholes and viruses just waiting to attack your computer!
2 Things You Shouldn’t Do When Protecting Your Child Online
1. When monitoring the sites your child is visiting, there is a limit which should not be crossed. If you continuously invade your child’s privacy online, it can damage their confidence and their social life. It also encourages them to find ways to go online behind your back which is obviously not something you wish to achieve.
2. This last point is probably the most important. Do not let your child roam freely online, particularly at an early age. Kids are more aware of the internet in this day and age and will easily learn what they should not. To some kids, it is great to do these forbidden things, so it is important that you still keep an eye on them. This really becomes important if they visit social networking sites such as MySpace or Facebook.
With these simple tips, you can let your child surf the web while not getting stressed about internet pedophilia.
