How to Make Internet a Productive Place for Your Kids?

By Debbie Gee

There are many kids out there who have access to the internet, and with that, a wealth of information with them. But, if they are not shown the right way to make use of this tool, it can be quite catastrophic and might even end up in problem for them. Hence, it is advisable that the kids get to know from an early stage about how to make use of the internet to their advantage, and know websites that are safe to surf, and those that are not. As a parent, you should be able to do this without any problem whatsoever.

Finding the good sites

You can make a filter on your browser with only the kind of sites that you would want your kids to see, which is essentially what you might want to do to ensure that your kids are protected from the evils of the internet and don’t have to be worried about what they might end up seeing. This filter is not particularly hard to create, and there are a ton of websites out there which can tell you safe websites and even provide step by step instructions on how to set up filters on your internet browser.

Educating your kids

More than imposing bans and rules, it can even be beneficial if you could simply have a talk with your kid and help them understand the good websites and reason out why they shouldn’t stray from these. If you can help your kid understand these things from an early age, you might share a better bond with them and perhaps pave the path for a better use of the internet at home. Of course, all of this sounds very preachy, but then, you have to play these parts out if you want to be a successful parent.

Hence, taking these steps from an early stage can be helpful and perhaps make your kid better acquainted with the World Wide Web. Of course, there is only so much that you can control as a parent because kids grow up really fast these days. Beyond a point, you might have to let go and let them learn things on their own.

This is such a difficult issue, so I appreciate your addressing it. I don't have kids, but when I do, I know I'll be terrified they'll be scarred by some of the stuff that is easily availle on the net. Keep up the good work :)
