Audio Books for Children: Start listening!
65
Many complain that the culture of reading is disappearing gradually, especially among the younger generations. A good way of developing a love for literature in your child is to provide access to audio books. Audio books are fascinating to children, and they respond better to listening. Interesting sound effects and voice modulations by the reader keeps the children glued. Some educational institutions are also contemplating use of audio books to help teachers teach better. It has been proved that learning via hearing and repetition is effective.
Audio books are readily available all over the internet. Several websites provide free audio books. They have a large library providing several categories of audio books. Some of the categories of books are:
- Fairytales
- Classic Stories
- Nursery Rhymes
- Educational books
- Original Stories
- Fables
- Mysteries
You can download a number of varied audio books depending on the interests and inclinations of your child. There are also several online book clubs for kids available. The clubs focus on some of the best books available for children. This ensures that once your child starts using audio books, he/she will continue. In addition, some audio books come with an English text. This helps children pick up reading faster. They are good for the development of their language and listening skills.
Some people believe that listening to audio books is not really reading. This statement can be true as well as false. This depends on what you consider reading. If you consider it to be a process by which you understand the content, use your imagination, relate to characters and make connections, then audio books would qualify as reading too. However, if you strictly interpret reading to be from written material, then it will not qualify as reading. It all depends on your point of view.
However, it cannot be argued that audio books are a great way of introducing your child to the rich world of literature. Audio books can develop a child’s interest in stories and learning which can later develop into conventional reading. So audio books can be a first step in developing your child’s reading habits.

Audiobooks are a great way to get children interested in literature. I've heard some people criticize audio books, but I think they're great. Children are able to listen to stories and become more interested in wanting to hear, or read, more stories. Sure this doesn't replace the importance of reading, but they are still a great resource. I listened to some books on tape when I was a child because I was always wanted to hear more stories and even though my mom always read to me, there were times when she chad to do other things. This was before I could read, but I loved having this to listen to and sometimes fall asleep listening to them.
